Some of the hate politics in this country have become so extreme that the only way to divert attention from their absolute horrific-ness, is to poke at the hate with absurdity. And this is the genius in the creative protests we are seeing, but what is the outcome?
Last Friday the Westboro Baptist Church gathered at a Seattle area military base to protest something- who knows what the hell they’re protesting? apparently they’re protesting any people who have fought in the military because the military acknowledges gay people by protesting at the funerals of dead servicemen and servicewomen.
Yeah- assholish! And Hello, it’s not like the military has just now let in gay people- gay people have always been in the military-it’s just that now they can admit it without repercussions by military law. So great, protest the truth. These protestors make no sense.
Basically total haters hating in the name of God.
To protest them, Seattle folk ordered up a bunch of zombies- that’s right, a whole bunch of people dressed up as zombies and went as the undead to mess with the bunch of “godhatesfags” freaks who were “protesting”
Genius! Distract the attention from the appalling outburst of hate by having zombies milling around. And the zombies outnumbered the protesters. Yes! Seriously, the only thing better would have been real zombies feasting on their tiny compassionless brains.
Then there’s Chick-Fil-A who has given millions of dollars to anti-gay groups. Essentially, these are the funders for the hate of the Westboro zombie prey. They’re not getting any of my money any time in the near future, or actually ever at this point because unless they want to give an equal amount of money to hate prevention or LGBT rights groups, they pretty much can’t undo the damage that’s already been caused.
It’s not a matter of just saying you hate gay people, or of having an opinion. It’s not just a free speech thing the constitution says we have rights to, it’s the laying a fundamental base of hate of some Americans and the solidifying of gender roles and heteronormativity (the belief that everyone is and should be heterosexual and that this is normal).
Sarah Palin being intentionally photographed eating Chick-Fil-A. Santorum also having a photo shoot eating “chikin,” these are BIG announcements to the world that they think it’s okay to hate on gay people. I would guess they might say they would never be so extreme as the Westboro Baptist church- but shocker- there’s no difference! They are still putting out animosity that encourages the hate of people, that basically says their mistreatment is excused and that violence against them is okay and makes sense.
It’s a sad display of politicians who at one time claimed they were for the United States of America. To be for this country, you must be in support of everyone here that is not disobeying the law, this includes gay people, lesbians, transgender people, people who serve in the military, all people of color, people of different religions that are not Christian, poor people, women. You can’t pick who in this country you support and who you don’t.
So continuing in the vein of creative protests, this Friday, people are doing a “Kiss-in” with same sex couples making out in Chick-Fil-A stores across the nation. At first I was like, yeah, funny, that’s creative, that’ll show ’em. Then I was like, Hmm, maybe that’s not the best thing they could’ve come up with. It’s creative- yes, but does it further promotes the stereotype of being gay is only about sex and gay people are sex crazed sinners? I think it could. So, what does it change? It makes a statement, but maybe not one that will make a difference. Who knows? I could be wrong, but what if people could get a competing chain to donate some of their proceeds on that day to a pro-LGBT rights organization when people eat there and mention why they are eating there.
Or, actually I think the longer term protest lies in the patronage of Chick-Fil-A. I plan to never eat Chick-Fil-A again, just like I don’t eat Cracker Barrel because they fired someone for being gay years back. Will they still survive without my patronage? Probably. But if all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning people and their allies of the world intentionally do not eat Chick-Fil-A ever again, they may not.
What is the value of a protest and what does each issue call for? Some call for zombies. Some call for completely boycotting food and not patronaging their establishment. In this case, I’m not sure kissing is the answer, but it’s creative. Maybe it will shake things up. Meanwhile, I’d sick a zombie on a Chick-Fil-A owner any day and I won’t be buying their food, ever.
